Health : Understanding Fevers

Every parent starts to worry when her child starts to run a fever. It is very important to understand what a fever is and what it does before reaching for the Acetaminophen. A fever is a natural immune response your body uses to fight bacteria, viruses and infection. If you do not run a fever or use medication to suppress the fever the more resistant the bacteria will be and will extend the time and degree to which you are ill. Fevers allow your body to produce more white blood cells and antibodies helping you to kill off the germs invading your body.

Contrary to what most parents think a fever of 101 degrees is not high. As a matter of fact when a child has a fever you should aim to keep the temperature between 101-102 degrees. This temperature is ideal for killing off the germs and is not at a dangerous level.

Dispelling a Myth:

Old wives tales tell us that fevers cause brain damage. The truth is if a fever goes above 107.6 for an extended period then brain damage is possible. If a child has a fever of 102 and the parent does not administer Acetaminophen again, contrary to old wives tales, this will not cause the temperature to increase. The body is an amazing machine and regulates the temperature that is needed to fight off the infection. As many parents know using medication to suppress the fever will not always keep the fever from increasing either.

What to do:

If a child has a fever under 102 degrees try to restrain from using Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen (I know easier said than done for us moms). Let the body work its natural wonder in killing germs. It is important to make sure your child is well hydrated, does not become overheated and is comfortable (lots and lots of TLC). If the temperature rises above 105 take the child immediately for medical attention.

When a fever reaches 105 degrees most doctors will give the parent instructions in alternating medications. Commonly used together is Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen since they are given at different interval but can be used in the same day. Acetaminophen is given every 4-6 hours and Ibuprofen is given every 6-8 hours. Speak to your child’s doctor for proper dosage and scheduling when using both these medications.

To help your child feel more comfortable try giving him a lukewarm bath, sponge bath or place a wet washcloth on his forehead. Never place your child in a cold bath or give an alcohol rub. This will cause chills thus increasing your child’s body temperature.

Finally, remember a fever is not your enemy but a friend helping your child to fight infection.
